study tour to Latvia
Study Tour on Animal Identification and Registration, Preventive Health and Epidemiology / Surveillance
organised with the support from the Latvian Rural Advisory and Training Centre (LRATC),
Latvia, October 04-11, 2009
As Member of the European Union Latvia is committed to implementing the EU Animal Health Strategy (2007-2013) and provides valuable insights into all aspects of private veterinary work, laboratory diagnostic control services, surveillance of veterinary drugs, animal risk management, animal identification and registration, veterinary education and more. As a former member of the Soviet Union and current member of the European Union Latvia has already undergone the successful transformation from a centrally organised state veterinarian service to a modern decentralised system based on private veterinary services in conformity with international OIE and WTO standards. The Latvian experience of transforming its veterinarian services was highly appreciated by the participants of the study tour.
The programme of the study tour covered all major aspects of the animal health and livestock production, giving the participants the chance to get acquainted with the transformation success at the policy making level as well as at the practical level.
